HIGHLIGHTS

  • Humanitarian partners continue to scale up response efforts in the Chuuk State following Typhoon Sinlaku’s presence over the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) from the 9 – 12 of April 2026.
  • On the 5th of May, the Government of FSM released the Initial Damage Assessment results. The data can be
    downloaded from the Department of Environment, Climate Change & Emergency Management (DECEM) website: https://fsm-data.sprep.org/dataset/typhoonsinlaku
  • The Joint Damage Assessment (JDA), an FSM-US Government process - in place through the Compact of Free Association (COFA) agreement - to unlock recovery funds has concluded.
  • Food and water continue to be a critical need with a second round of distribution by national and state authorities, underway for the entire state of Chuuk.
  • School continues to be disrupted with families continuing to take shelter in some facilities flagging the need for NFI,
    protection monitoring and the continuation of learning.
  • Of the assessed health facilities, more than 65% are of high priority in terms of its criticality of function with additional risks due to the disruption of water supply, insufficient sanitation facilities and the lack of cold-chain
    capacity.
  • The Presidential and State Declarations of Emergencies are in place until October 2026.
  • Through the coordinated efforts of the UN Environmental Emergency Response Team, the UN Resident Coordinator for Micronesia, and the Ambassador of Japan to FSM, the Japan Mine Action Service (JMAS) were engaged further to undertake underwater inspection of capsized vessels in Weno port, Chief Maila & Balina and began sealing of fuel tanks.
